HODG SHABBAT
Earlier today I found myself reading yet another lengthy article about loneliness.
By now we all know it’s an epidemic. And that it’s not as simple as hanging out with a bunch of people – we all know we can feel lonely in a crowd, and blisfully content alone in nature. What the experts are finding is that religious institutions, or ones that replicate aspects of them - -being part of something bigger than yourselves, combingin moral issues with social issues, gathering in multi-generational spaces – are a powerful source of connection. That is so much of what HODG is for me. Sure, it’s about the actions. But those actions are a shortcut to feeling like we/I make a difference, and that I am not alone. Which, of course, brings me to HODG Shabbat.
I am decidedly not religious. But those old Jews were not stupid when they invented Shabbat. A day of rest. A time to come together and reflect. To be together. To connect. That is what HODG Shabbat is about. And that is why we do it every month. Please join us. You don’t need to be Jewish, or religious. All you need to do is come over, maybe with a bottle of wine to share or a dessert, and hang out with us. We’l have a guest to spark discussion and thought – this month it will be ROBERT HUBBELL**, who will share his wisdom and insights and break some bread with us!
We hope you can join.
** Robert Hubbell writes a daily pro-democracy newsletter that is full of grounded hope and practical optimism and that loads of us HODGers look forward to reading every day.
