Want to hang out and do good in your city?
Here’s how to start a HODG Chapter in your own community!
HangOutDoGood is a 100% volunteer-led, grassroots community group.
We first came together as friends, neighbors and locals in the area with the same desire to take action and make a change. Everything we do is either connected to helping a local organization or school, planning some sort of political action or hosting Zoom learning sessions for our members. We work as a team, but sometimes one person takes the lead on a project- like how Loretta spearheads our monthly Birthday Cakes, or Melissa and Helen with our weekly Youth Outreach Bags. Volunteers also take charge on various clothing and food drives, but we’re all here to support when needed. If you’re starting solo, follow the steps below to begin growing your HODG Chapter…
Step One: Ask a Friend
The first step is easy. Call/text/email your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers and see if they want to join you in getting more involved in the community! Discuss what types of issues you care about. Is it to feed the unhoused? Donate clothes to youth? Collect books for schools? You just need one project to start with. Maybe it’s a Sunday Lunch Drive in your area. Or writing postcards for local and national elections. The more people that join, the more ideas and resources you’ll have at your fingertips. If you are starting solo for now, you can plan a project and tell your friends: “Hey, I’m going to this thing — join me!”
Step Two: Outreach
Almost everything we do is in partnership with another organization or someone in need. Start reaching out to orgs in your area and ask if and how they need help? Most of our ongoing projects were born from these types of conversations - figuring out ways we can be of assistance. If there’s a topic we want to know more about (like the housing crisis!) we invite an expert to come talk to us. Or we attend city council and neighborhood council meetings to learn more. HODG was born from building relationships and everything else grew from there.
Step Three: Schedule a Call with HODG
If all this sounds good to you, email us at HangOutDoGood@gmail.com to hop on a quick phone call! We’d love to meet and share helpful tips and tricks to get your chapter off the ground. Please introduce yourself, the city you’re based in and what issues you’re most interested in focusing on.
Be a Leader
So many people reach out to us in hopes that a HODG chapter exists in their area — or they are interested in starting one. But too often, the emails stop and they change their minds. They get overwhelmed. It feels like too much work.
We promise you, it isn’t.
And we promise you again, that the impact you make is worth it!
We dare you to be a leader. Join us. We’ll be here to guide you every step of the way.
