Gingerbread House Making
Do you all remember OPPORTUNITY HOUSE? It’s the former Tri-Delt Sorority House in Westwood that Sam Prater, the ED of LA Room + Board, bought and turned into a stunning residence for incarcerated youth. There are currently 5 young men living there as part of their sentences.
HODG’s Youth Justice Working Group has been collaborating with Sam and Angeles and others at Opportunity House both to support the residents of the house, and also to try and improve policies surrounding incarcerated youth. This action is about support, and love.
On Saturday Dec 7, a small group of us – the first 10 who RSVP!! – is gathering at my house to decorate GINGERBREAD HOUSES for the 5 families.
** For those who are late to the party, we are also collecting $$ for Target gift cards for each family so they can buy dinner/gifts/necessities. (Needless to say all 5 families are extremely low income families)
Now, I don’t know if you know, but my sister Marissa and I might as well be professional gingerbread decorators. We make them every year. Our kids used to love doing it with us, but they’ve totally aged out, so for the past few years it’s been me and Marissa alone with mega-tons of candy – that I store in my basement. Literally my entire basement is full of candy in giant tupperware boxes! Bottomline, we are so happy to have a reason to make them.
