A TEACH-IN ON ANTISEMITISM
Funny how religion -- God, or whatever -- is supposed to inspire awe in us. It rarely does for me. Except when it's about Social Justice. Next Sunday, on Feb 4, TIOH (Temple Israel of Hollywood) is hosting a morning that I do think will inspire, if not awe -- it's about hate, which is hard to feel awe around -- then at least understanding.
A collection of amazing expert speakers on the history of Israel and Palestine and on the rise of extremism and antisemitism will gather for what they are calling STOP HATE: A Teach-In On Antisemitism. There will also be breakout discussion sections on topics like antisemitism on college campuses, zionism, and the role of non-Jews in the movement.
Here’s THE LINE-UP:
Dov Waxman: Director of the UCLA Center for Israel Studies, also Chair of Israel Studies at UCLA. Waxman wrote the “ i” which the HODG Antisemitism Learning Group (woo hoo!) just read and discussed. It was incredibly helpful in understanding the history behind the current mess.
Stephen Smith – former Executive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation, founder of the UK Holocaust Centre. Recognized as the UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education. Smith works globally on genocide education. He even educated the HODG Antisemitism Learning Group!! We learned a ton from him. You will too.
Sharon Nazarian – founded the Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Served as the ADL’s Senior Vice President of International Affairs, focusing on combating antisemitism and racial hatred globally.
Aziza Hasan – ED of NewGround: A Muslim-Jewish Partnership for Change. Featured on platforms like National Public Radio Aziza’s work in interfaith dialogue and community building is widely acknowledged.
This will be an incredible day of learning and reflecting . All are welcome. You do not need to be a member of TIOH.
